Influence of swimming on our body system

Swimming is a wonderful and very healthy form of physical activity. What effect does swimming have on our body and what is the benefit of swimming for the human body?

Respiratory System

Swimming improves the strength of the respiratory muscles and increases their tone, strengthens the ventilation of the lungs, increases the vital volume of the lungs. The swimmer's breathing is coordinated with the movements of his/her limbs. One cycle of our hand movements is usually performed for one breath and exhale. Since a lot of energy is wasted while swimming, the need for oxygen is growing. That is why the swimmer aspires to fully use every breath. More complete exhalation is promoted by water pressure on the chest, it also promotes the development of muscles that expand the chest.

As a result of swimming, the vital capacity of the lungs increases and the functional capabilities of the respiratory system increase, the number and elasticity of the alveoli increases, too.

As a result of the systematic swimming exercises, the maximum oxygen consumption also increases. Swimmers set a record of 5 liters of oxygen per minute.

Cardiovascular System

Regularly swimming people increase the strength of their heart muscles, the cardiac output (blood volume ejected by the heart in one cycle of its activity), and the number of heartbeats per minute decreases. The trained swimmers in the heart rate at rest 50-60 or even 40-45 cuts per minute, whereas in normal healthy people the heart rate is 65 to 75. At the same time, working with the maximum intensity, the heart of a swimmer is able to develop a rate of up to 200 cuts per minute, and the volume of blood pumped into the aorta increases from 4-6 liters to 35-40 liters per minute.

As we see, swimming contributes to the strengthening of our cardiovascular system, but the work of the heart proceeds under very favorable conditions. The pressure of water facilitates the outflow of blood from the periphery to the heart. Therefore, swimming is suitable for the elderly and even for people with a weak heart. Swimming helps change the composition of the blood. When a person is in the water, the amount of blood cells (red blood cells, leukocytes, hemoglobin) increases. This is observed even after a single stay in the water. After 1.5-2 hours after swimming, the blood composition actually reaches the normal level.

Musculoskeletal System

When our being in the water, regardless of the chosen style of swimming, all of our body muscles comprehensively work. The uniform work of the muscles of the whole body contributes to the formation of a harmonious figure having the smooth streamlined shapes without any sharp protrusions and angles.

During swimming, the tension and relaxation of different muscles alternate, this, in turn, increases their efficiency and strength to a large degree. Swimming requires the coordination of all of our moving muscles. In this case, water creates more resistance than air, so, for effective and efficient swimming, a person has to strain more. Therefore, as a result of swimming, stronger and more elastic muscles are formed. At the same time, during swimming, the body is supported by water so that there is no excessive strain on any group of muscles or joints.

When our being in the water, the static tension of the body and load on the spine significantly decreases, our spine is properly formed and a good posture is developed. The active movement of feet in the water strengthens the feet and prevents the development of flat feet. Swimming helps our joints remain very flexible, especially in the areas of our neck, shoulders, and hips. The index of total mobility in swimmer's joints is much higher than that of the athletes of different other sport specializations.

Nervous system

Swimming exercises have a positive effect on the state of the central nervous system, contributing to the formation of a balanced and strong type of nervous activity.

Swimming tones up the nervous system, balances the processes of excitation and inhibition, and improves the blood supply to the brain.

The pleasant associations associated with swimming, maintaining the balance of our body in the water, have a beneficial effect on the state of the psyche, contributing to the formation of a positive emotional background. Swimming helps overcome the hydrophobia, relieves fatigue, helps with nervous overexertion and depression, and greatly raises the mood, significantly improving our sleep, attention, and memory as a whole.

The regular swimming lessons discipline and increase our willed qualities, too.

Immune system

Everyone knows that swimming is an effective means of hardening, increasing resistance to low temperatures and consequently making the body less susceptible to colds. As a result of changes in our blood composition during our swimming lessons, the protective properties of our immune system increase to a great extent, intensifying the resistance of our body system to various serious infections.

The programs of exercises for losing weight

Of course, you can just swim in the pool, especially without straining. These loads can gradually get rid of excess weight. It is known that even just keeping themselves afloat for one hour, persons can burn about 300 kcal. But many people use various special programs that help speed up the process of losing weight. There are two main directions: a swimming program and aquaaerobics.

To lose weight, when swimming in the pool, many people follow a few simple rules.

Rule # 1.

These people constantly stay afloat. Only constant body tension will allow people to spend a lot of calories. They do not hold on to the side. Of course, with severe fatigue or uncertain swimming, they take breaks, but not for a long time and too often.

Rule # 2.

These people constantly actively move. They say that fat will only be burned if your heart rate rises from 130 to 160 beats per minute. Thus, for an hour people can burn from 600 to 1300 calories. To move actively, people usually choose a certain style of swimming. Many people say that the most effective style is a butterfly. If it is too heavy for them, they try the crawl. It is less energy-intensive but also helps quickly burn calories.

Rule # 3.

They say that swimming styles need to be constantly changed. For example, many people swim for 5 minutes by using a butterfly, and the next 5-10 minutes – the crawl. If they are tired, they go for a breaststroke or swimming on their back. And, then, they repeat everything in a circle.

Rule # 4.

These people do not eat after classes in the pool. This rule is rather difficult to observe. But these people try not to eat for an hour after visiting the pool. Thus, their bodies will continue to burn fat.

Rule # 5.

These people say that each lesson needs to last at least 30 minutes. They do it 2-3 times a week.

Aquaaerobics

Aquaaerobics is the same aerobics, but only in water. In other words, people need to perform varied rhythmic dance movements while in the water. Such classes have a lot of pluses. There are cases when women, regularly exercising, get rid of weight up to 30 pounds with the help of aquaaerobics alone.

Aquaaerobics practiced by many people. They say that it is great for people with obesity. With a large excess weight, many standard exercises are simply contraindicated because there is a strong effect on the joints. The water in the pool supports people. This helps relieve the spine and joints. Very big women usually enjoy fulfilling various exercises in the water because this is psychologically easier for them. They are not bothered by their excess weight as women do not focus their attention under water. In addition, people say that aquaaerobics classes do not leave painful sensations, as it happens after usual aerobic exercises or fitness. Uniform water pressure prevents the accumulation of lactic acid, relieving pain.

So, many people say that the pool is a great way to lose weight, strengthen the mood, and enhance the overall emotional background. So, usually, people do not wait for summer, they take a swimsuit and towel and forward to a healthy lifestyle and an ideal figure by using their own swimming pool located just in their backyard!

Ancient pools

There is an opinion that the swimming pool appeared relatively recently, about two hundred years ago, in the XVIII century. Although, the ancient culture of ablutions existed for a long time, but, as a result of persecutions (yes, persecution may even be for hygiene), it practically disappeared in Europe. However, the traditions of ablution are well preserved in the East. In addition, the culture of ablution was strongly developed in the ancient world. This is evidenced by numerous archaeological data, where the pool played an important role.

Alexander’s Pool

Historians of ancient Greece once thought that the Macedonians are crude barbarians, but archaeological finds have completely refuted this opinion. Archaeologists unearthed the capital of Macedonia for 30 years, while they managed to unearth only 1% of its area. It became obvious that in the 3rd and 4th centuries BC, the capital of ancient Macedonia was quite impressive. The territory of the palace alone occupied more than 60,000 square meters. And the most "fresh" pool of the Ancient World was found there. This pool confirmed the Macedonian people's well-developed culture of sport swimming. Sport swimming was also practiced in other ancient countries and cities located far from natural reservoirs.

Ancient basins of the Crimea

Evpatoria is famous for its healing climate, capable of healing various diseases. A successful combination of sea and steppe climate makes it easy to breathe here even on the hottest days. In its climatic conditions, Evpatoria resembles northern Italy and southern France.

The very first vacationer of this resort town can be considered... Hercules, the famous hero of ancient Greek myths. As a result of archaeological research in Evpatoria, a remarkable bas-relief was found, where Hercules is depicted at the moment of rest. Allegedly, having accomplished his 12 exploits, Hercules decided to retire to the well-deserved rest and received it in Evpatoria. Although Evpatoria is located near a natural reservoir, archaeologists have discovered numerous remains of domestic and palatial swimming pools in its vicinity. It is worth noting that the types of pools differed in the variety of shapes and sizes.

Pools of mythical heroes

The Mediterranean climate of the Ancient Greece contributed to the development of cattle breeding and agriculture. The natural conditions of the Greece, unlike the countries of the East, were characterized by poor flora and fauna and low fertility of soils. Natural features contributed to the emergence and development of many original architectural structures, for example, the Nymphaeum sanctuary.

There was an artistically processed pond in the center of the composition of the nymphaeus, where the waters of the spring descended from a high cliff. The altar adorned the top of the rock, where the ancient Greeks sacrificed nymphs. Later, in ancient Rome and during the Renaissance, the composition of the nymphaea became a favorite park motive: it was usually placed in a shady grotto with water devices surrounded by greenery. Palm, olive, pistachio, plane tree groves stretched near the sports facilities, swimming pools, altars, and temples, decorated with statues, vases, and fountains.

After Alexander’s death

After the death of Alexander the Great, his associates founded their own States. The capital of Syria, Antioch on Orontes, was famous for its splendid gardens and pools. Next to it was the famous Daphne park, formed around the shrine of Apollo and Artemis. Its founders, the Seleucids, were the descendants of the closest associates of the great conqueror. They planted the first cypresses here. Subsequently, the park expanded, reaching about 10 miles along the circumference. There were many springs, baths, fountains, porticoes, and hotels in the park. Over time, the Hellenistic garden lost its social and educational importance and became a place for entertainment and recreation.

The pools as a means of rest and relaxation have been known since antiquity, at least, since when writing appeared. So, the first mentioning the design of the basin dates from the third century B.C. according to the documents from Roman history. Even then, the wealthy Romans preferred water bodies for individual use, where they could relax without attracting the attention of outsiders. The first basins were made of closely adhering stone blocks. Joints between blocks were filled with vegetable-based resins. Water procedures and sport competitions took place there, in those reservoirs. The first mentioning the heating of water in the basins also refers to ancient Roman sources.
The pools of common use first began to build in the XIX century in many European countries, after the creation of an indoor pool, in England (1830), which became famous throughout the world. The revival of the Olympic Games dramatically increased the construction of swimming pools for water sports. A sharp rise in the construction of sport and health pools, water parks, and even spa pools began in the 20th century around the world. So, many large pools were built in Wales and Santiago. Some large cruise liners have also been equipped with inland pools with sea water since 1907 (for example, the Liner “Adriatica”).
Later, the design, purpose, and ways of maintaining the pools have been constantly improved. Along with heating the water, much attention was paid to cleaning, disinfection, aeration of water, and hygienic treatment of the internal surface of the pool. Different modern whimsical requirements of customers lead to a wide variety of design solutions for facing, lighting, and special effects (waves, geysers, color effects, hydro-massage, etc.).
The practice of building the pools into the landscape of country own houses for practical use (for example, next to a sauna, "lotus pond" for meditation in the oriental style, etc.) has spread. Thus, man's fantasy combined with the eternal desire for water as a means of rest leads to constant improvement and increased diversity in the construction of these artificial reservoirs.
